1. Overview
Using MyAlgebra is easy! First, enter your problem and click the
Next button (or select an Example
problem). A list of topics that can solve your problem will automatically be
generated (click the dropdown list to view all of the topics). Next, select the
topic that best describes the problem you are entering, and click
Next. That's it!
2. Basic Operations
Numbers: 0-9
Variables: a-z
Operators: + (add)
– (subtract) *
(multiply) / (divide)
Decimal Point: .
Parenthesis: ( )
Brackets: [ ]
Absolute Value: | |
Exponent: ^
Example #1: 5a+2b-3*4/5
Example #2: (2+x)^2+[3+x]-4*2y^2
Example #3: (1.4+x)/(3-x^2)+|y-4|
3. Systems of Equations
To enter in a system of equations, enter in the first equation and press <Enter>,
then enter in the second equation directly beneath. For example:
x+y=6
3x+4y=20
4. Evaluating
You can substitute in values for variables by entering in additional lines with
the <Enter> key. For example, the following will solve
for x when y=4:
x+y=6
y=4
You can also evaluate functions for a particular value. For instance, you can
evaluate f(x)=x+3 where x=5 by typing:
f(x)=x+3
f(5)
You can also enter problems using the following method:
f(x)=2/x
g(x)=-5/2+4/2x
gof
... and:
f(x)=2x+2x/5
g(x)=4
f+g
5. Points/Segments
You can enter in a point by using the following format: (1,2)
You can enter in a segment by using the following format:
(1,2)-(3,4)
Tip: for any problem requiring multiple lines of data, you can use the <Enter>
key. For example, if you would like to find an equation with the point (1,2)
and the slope 1/2, enter in:
(1,2)
m=1/2
6. Matrices
You can enter in a matrix by using the function Matrix[], and
commas/semi-colons to delimit columns/rows. For example:
Matrix[1,2,3;4,5,6;7,8,9]
...will produce:
1 2 3
4 5 6
7 8 9
To add two matrices, you can enter something similar to the following:
Matrix[1,2,3;4,5,6;7,8,9]+Matrix[1,2,3;4,5,6;7,8,9]
7. Examples
MyAlgebra can solve a wide array of problems. Any time you are unsure of how to
enter a problem, click the Show me an example
link and look through the list of available topics. After locating the topic
that is closest to the problem you are trying to enter, click on it and view
the format. You can edit the example problem that was generated, or click
Next to solve the example problem.
8. Frequently Asked Questions:
Q: How do I enter multiple terms in the numerator and/or
denominator?
A: Use parenthesis to group terms. Example:
(x+2)/(x-2)
Q: When I type 1/2x,
the variable ends up in the denominator - how can I move it out?
A: Type 1/2*x to
multiply 1/2 by
x and pull it out of the denominator.
Q: Can I enter word/story problems?
A: MyAlgebra currently does not support word problems.
